The Gilded Age Season 4: The wait is over. The Gilded Age returns to HBO on Sunday, Nov. 1.

Season 4 brings new drama to New York high society. Star Christine Baranski says fans should brace themselves.

She told Entertainment Weekly in October 2026 that "serious complications in the household" are on the way.

Baranski plays Agnes van Rhijn. She said a great deal happens this season.

The large cast of established characters keeps the story lines moving from scene to scene with style.

What to Expect in Season 4

The new season looks at the "cost" of Bertha Russell's rise through New York society. Carrie Coon plays Bertha.

HBO says her family must now face the consequences.

Her husband, George Russell, is at the center of the fallout. Morgan Spector plays him. George is still upset over Bertha's role in their daughter's marriage.

Coon spoke about the tension in an August 2026 interview with Vanity Fair. She said George has not forgiven his wife.

He believes she meddled in their children's personal lives in a damaging way. Coon added that George is ruthless in business. He is not ruthless with his family.

Other story lines are heating up too. Agnes is chasing a chance to win back her place in society.

Marian Brook, played by Louisa Jacobson, is forging a new path. Peggy Scott, played by Denée Benton, is working through her relationship with her future in-laws.

How Many Episodes Are in Season 4

HBO has confirmed eight episodes. The first season had nine. Seasons 2 and 3 each had eight.

Neither HBO nor the show's creators have explained the change. Creator Julian Fellowes has spoken about the strain of making such a lavish series.

He told The Hollywood Reporter in August 2024 that period drama is always expensive. He said he stays out of the areas he does not control.

Budget limits have sometimes forced him to scale back big scenes. He gave an example. If producers say they cannot afford a ball, the scene becomes a dinner.
