The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 4 Is in Doubt, and the Clues Add Up

In Brief:

  •  AMC has not renewed The Walking Dead: Dead City for season 4, and no announcement has come in over a month.
  •  Lauren Cohan joined Prime Video's Stillwater, and Logan Kim joined Netflix's Pagans, raising schedule questions.

The Walking Dead: Dead City: The spinoff has no fourth season announced. Its cast is already moving on.

The Walking Dead has seen many highs and lows. That is no surprise for a franchise that has been on the air for almost 20 years.

Its devoted fans have never been shy about speaking up.

The original series and its first spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, heard the loudest complaints.

Some of those missteps are well known. Fans were angry about Glenn's death.

They were just as frustrated by the long Saviors storyline that followed.

Fear the Walking Dead also drew criticism. It pushed aside its fan-favorite leads and brought in Morgan from the original show.

Now the franchise may be heading toward another stumble.

Two Stars Sign On to Other Projects

The Walking Dead: Dead City may not return for a fourth season.

AMC has not made any announcement about the spinoff's future. But the cast is booking other work.

Lauren Cohan plays Maggie Rhee on both The Walking Dead and Dead City. She recently joined Prime Video's Stillwater as a series regular.

Logan Kim plays her son, Hershel, on Dead City. He has signed on to Netflix's Pagans. There, he will play the son of Steven Yeun's character.

The casting carries some irony. Yeun played Hershel's father, Glenn, on The Walking Dead. Glenn was killed by Negan while Maggie was pregnant with Hershel.

That brings up Negan. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays him on Dead City. Morgan has been balancing the show with Prime Video's Sterling Point.

His role there has been small so far. But the series was renewed for a second season, which could mean more screen time.

The open question is whether he can commit to both.

No Word From AMC

None of this is official. Morgan's schedule proves an actor can work on two series at once. Shorter seasons make that easier today.

Still, the silence is troubling. More than a month has passed with no renewal news. AMC has said many times that it is committed to the franchise.

A fourth season would also have to fit around the schedules of Morgan, Cohan and Kim. Unless there is no fourth season at all.

Scott M. Gimple is AMC's chief content officer for The Walking Dead Universe.

He recently spoke to The Direct about the show's chances. He sounded hopeful.

He said he thinks the show has a good shot. But he also said it is a different time.

He was pointing to how streaming has changed television. Audiences are now willing to wait longer between seasons.

Fans noticed the lukewarm tone. They also noticed how it contrasted with his firm commitment to the franchise itself.

A Strong Third Season

Season 3 earned praise from fans and critics. Most viewers called it a major step up from the first two seasons.

The story moved past Maggie and Negan's dark history. The unlikely allies tried to protect New York from the dead and from dangerous survivors.

Their goal was to preserve the city for the next generation.

The season 3 finale loosely set up a fourth season. But it could also serve as a series finale.

Dead City would go out on a high note. It would also leave the larger franchise in a shaky spot.

What Comes Next for the Franchise

A cancellation would affect more than one show. Dead City is the only Walking Dead series left with room for more stories.

The Ones Who Live ended after one season in 2024. Daryl Dixon will end with its fourth and final season.

Without Dead City, the number of active Walking Dead shows would drop from two to zero. That is a bleak outlook for a franchise of this age.

At least one series from this universe has aired on AMC since 2010. That year, The Walking Dead debuted with a six-episode first season.

The flagship show ran until 2022 and ended after 11 seasons. Fear the Walking Dead, World Beyond and Tales of the Walking Dead aired alongside it. Three newer sequel spinoffs followed.

Daryl Dixon season 4 was set to air this year. Production was already wrapping up at the end of 2025.

AMC pushed the premiere to February 2027 instead. That keeps the franchise's 17-year streak of annual content alive for at least one more year.

Without a new plan, the streak could end in 2028.

The Simplest Fix

The easiest solution is to renew Dead City. The show still has stories to tell about Maggie and Negan.

Season 3 gave it a fresh start. That alone makes a case for another season.

If the schedules of Morgan, Cohan and Kim push production to 2028, so be it.

A Slower, Smaller Rollout Ahead

Gimple and AMC are working on the franchise's next chapter. Details are still unclear.

Gimple has said it will likely include new series, standalone projects and shorter projects. He has also said the rollout will be slower.

Norman Reedus is reportedly in talks to return in another role after Daryl Dixon ends. Many involved still hope for a reunion or crossover series.

It would bring back Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira as Michonne.

It would effectively act as a twelfth and final season of The Walking Dead.

Fans can only hope the franchise makes it work one more time.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 arrives on AMC and AMC+ in February 2027.
