Beyond Society: Netflix will release a new three-part docuseries, “Beyond Society,” on Friday, Dec. 18.
The series revisits the 1972 Andes plane crash. It arrives about three years after the 2023 film “Society of the Snow.”
Director J.A. Bayona and several cast members from the film travel to the crash site in the docuseries.
Reality and fiction meet there. The series also looks at the 50 years since the tragedy.
It shows how life unfolded for the survivors. It does the same for the families who lost loved ones.
Who Made the Series
Bayona and Carlos Torres created the docuseries. Torres serves as director.
The series includes testimony from survivors and from relatives of those who never returned home.
Author Piers Paul Read will be interviewed. He wrote the 1974 book “Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors.”
Author Pablo Vierci will also take part. His book “Society of the Snow” was first published in 2008.
Actors Enzo Vogrincic, AgustÃn Pardella and MatÃas Recalt are expected to appear.
Bayona said in an official statement that the series lets the team close an important chapter of their lives.
He said it also thanks those who trusted them to tell the story.
The Andes Crash and the 2023 Film
A Uruguayan rugby team was traveling to Chile in 1972 when its plane crashed in the Andes Mountains.
There were 45 people on board. Twelve died in the initial crash. Injuries, an avalanche and exposure claimed more lives in the days that followed.
The total death toll reached 29. Sixteen people survived and were rescued.
Bayona directed “Society of the Snow,” which dramatized the ordeal. It ranked among the best films of 2023.
It holds a 90% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its audience score is about 86%.
Critics praised the film’s technical skill and noted that its simple, powerful message never got lost.
Viewers described it as an outstanding recreation of a grueling true story.
The film earned Oscar nominations for best international feature film and best makeup and hairstyling. It did not win either award.
Books and films have told the Andes story many times. The 2023 version may be the strongest of them.
“Beyond Society” begins streaming on Netflix on Friday, Dec. 18.
