The "Malcolm in the Middle" star shared an emotional message on social media Friday, Sept. 18.
It comes weeks after he and his wife, Paige Price, announced their separation.
Muniz, 40, posted a photo of himself seated in a chair, looking deep in thought. In the caption, he described the past six weeks as "a nightmare I'm praying to wake up from."
He said everything felt heavy and unclear. He added that it all seemed to fall apart at once. He would not wish this period on anyone.
The Emmy-nominated actor did not mention the divorce in his post. He did say his struggles came with an unexpected upside.
With nowhere to hide, he finally had time for honest self-reflection. He said he can now see the areas of his life that need work.
His goal is to become the real version of himself. He said that is not the polished image he shows the public.
Muniz and Price married in 2019. They announced their split in a July 1 post.
Muniz said the decision followed a private period of separation. The marriage lasted nearly six years.
In his message, Muniz said he recently read that hitting rock bottom can be a wake-up call. Such a moment, he wrote, forces changes a person needed to make all along.
He believes he will look back on this low point with gratitude in five years. The high he reaches then, he said, will exist only because he went through this.
He closed on a hopeful note. Muniz said this is not the end of his story. He called it the start of hard, uncomfortable work.
He plans to treat this season as "the foundation, not the finish line." He also had a message for anyone in a low place. They are not broken, he said. They are being rebuilt.
Muniz rose to fame as a child star. He is best known for early 2000s roles in "Big Fat Liar" and "Agent Cody Banks."
He returned as the title character in Hulu's revival miniseries, "Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair." The series premiered in April.
Muniz is also a fixture in motorsports. He has competed in several racecar events since 2004.
More than a decade after a season-ending injury, he returned to stock car racing in 2021. He joined the SRL Pro Late Model series that year.
He then appeared in the ARCA Menards Series in 2022 and 2023.
Today, he competes in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. He drives the No. 33 Ford F-150 for Team Reaume.
