Des Moines Flood Warning: The National Weather Service has issued an updated flood warning covering the Des Moines metropolitan area.
Forecasters say urban and low-lying areas, along with small streams, are at risk due to excessive rainfall.
Affected Counties
The warning applies to a portion of central Iowa. Dallas, Jasper and Polk counties are included in the alert.
Duration
The warning remains in effect until 5:15 p.m. Friday.
Current Impacts
Flooding is either imminent or already underway across rivers, creeks and other flood-prone locations.
Streams continue to rise as runoff from earlier rainfall works its way through the system.
Motorists and residents should expect widespread areas of slow-moving or standing water. Fourmile Creek has already exceeded flood stage.
That includes the crossing at NE 86th Avenue in Ankeny, where high water was reported as of 5 a.m.
What Triggered the Warning
Doppler radar and automated rain gauges detected heavy rainfall from thunderstorms at 5:11 a.m.
Flooding is either occurring or expected to begin shortly across the warned area.
Rainfall totals have ranged between 4 and 9 inches. Isolated pockets have seen totals approaching 10 inches, according to the NWS.
This new flood warning supersedes the flash flood warning previously issued for Polk and Jasper counties.

They include: Des Moines, West Des Moines, Ankeny, Urbandale, Johnston, Clive, Newton, Altoona, Waukee, Pleasant Hill, Grimes, Windsor Heights, Carlisle, Bondurant, Polk City, Saylorville, Mitchellville, Colfax, Monroe, Prairie City.
