Sandra Bullock Reveals She Began Grieving Bryan Randall 4 Years Before His Death

Sandra Bullock: Sandra Bullock is sharing new details about the death of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall.

Actress Sandra Bullock speaking candidly about late partner Bryan Randall's ALS battle during a Smartless podcast interview.

The actress made the candid comments during a recent appearance on the "Smartless" podcast.

The show is hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett. It marked a rare moment of Bullock discussing her private life in public.

Randall died on Aug. 5, 2023, at age 57. He had been battling ALS. He worked as a photographer. He and Bullock were together for eight years before his death.

According to Bullock, Randall wanted his diagnosis kept quiet. She said she understood his reasoning and honored the request.

For a period, only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, knew what was happening.

Bullock said that secrecy came at a cost. She described feeling isolated during that time. She initially believed she could manage the silence on her own.

The pressure grew heavier as time went on. Bullock was caring for Randall while raising her two young children.

The Covid-19 pandemic added another layer of strain. She called the combination "a trifecta that was pretty dark."

Eventually, Bullock confided in close friends. She named actress Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Bateman, Jason Bateman's wife, as two people she opened up to.

Bullock said she began grieving Randall long before he actually died. She estimated that shift started roughly four years before his passing.

Randall was ill for at least half of their relationship, Bullock said. She described losing the person she knew well before his body gave out.

She said she didn't fully process that loss until after he died. Bullock compared the caregiving period to being stuck on a treadmill, with no time to stop and reflect.

Bullock and Randall's relationship began in January 2015. She had hired him to photograph her son Louis's fifth birthday party.

Ten months later, the couple made their first public red-carpet appearance together at the premiere of "Our Brand is Crisis" in Los Angeles.

Following Randall's death, his family released a statement. They said he chose to keep his ALS diagnosis private, and those close to him respected that wish.

The family also thanked the doctors and nurses who cared for him, noting some sacrificed time with their own families to help. They asked for privacy as they grieved his loss.
