Sinner Medvedev: Jannik Sinner advanced to the men’s final at the Italian Open after defeating Daniil Medvedev in a dramatic semifinal on Saturday.

Jannik Sinner plays a forehand shot against Daniil Medvedev during their intense Sinner Medvedev Rome semi-final match.

The world No. 1 overcame a rain-delayed contest to secure a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory in a match that lasted two hours and 30 minutes.

Sinner will now face Casper Ruud in Sunday’s championship match in Rome.

The semifinal featured multiple momentum swings, with Sinner taking control early before Medvedev fought back to force a deciding set.

Despite the interruption caused by weather, Sinner maintained composure in the final set and closed out the match to reach another Masters 1000 final.

The Italian star is now one win away from claiming his sixth Masters 1000 title, which would extend his career record at that level.

Jannik Sinner battled through physical discomfort during his semifinal at the Italian Open, receiving treatment on his right thigh during Friday night’s suspended match against Daniil Medvedev.

The top-ranked Italian also appeared unwell during the contest and vomited as Medvedev pushed him to his most difficult challenge of the tournament.

Despite the setback, Sinner returned in improved condition when play resumed on Saturday.

He appeared relaxed before the restart, sharing jokes with his coaching staff and playing football during his warm-up inside the center court complex.

The lighter mood came as sunny spring weather returned to Rome after several days of unsettled conditions, setting the stage for Sinner’s eventual victory and place in the final.

Jannik Sinner completed his rain-delayed semifinal victory at the Italian Open after further interruptions pushed back the restart in Rome.

Play had initially been scheduled to resume at 3:00 p.m. local time on Saturday.

The restart was delayed by an additional hour because of fresh rain and the completion of the men’s doubles semifinal.

That doubles match was won by Italian pair Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.

Sinner returned to the court holding a 4-2 advantage in the deciding third set against Daniil Medvedev.

The lead proved decisive, as Medvedev was unable to recover after the suspension.

Sinner closed out the match to secure his place in the final and extend his winning streak to 33 consecutive matches in ATP top-level tournaments.

Daniil Medvedev briefly threatened a comeback in the deciding set, taking the seventh game after resuming play in his semifinal against Jannik Sinner at the Italian Open.

However, Sinner responded immediately. The world No. 1 held serve to love in the following game and finished the match in under 20 minutes after play restarted.

The victory set up a championship clash with Casper Ruud, who advanced to the final with a dominant straight-sets win over Luciano Darderi.

Ruud cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 semifinal victory on Saturday in another contest affected by heavy rain in Rome.

The Norwegian will now have an opportunity to face Sinner again in the Italian capital after suffering a one-sided defeat to the Italian at the same tournament last year.

Casper Ruud enters the men’s final at the Italian Open still searching for his first set victory against Jannik Sinner.

Ruud has lost all four of his previous meetings with Sinner and has yet to win a set in the rivalry.

Their most recent meeting in Rome came in the 2025 quarterfinals, when Sinner delivered a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory at the Foro Italico.

The women’s final later on Saturday will feature Coco Gauff against Elina Svitolina.

Gauff is seeking her first singles title in Rome after finishing runner-up at the tournament last year.

The American was defeated by Jasmine Paolini in the 2025 final.

A title in Rome would provide a strong boost for Gauff as she prepares to defend her championship at French Open later this month.
