Shai MVP: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is set to join an elite group of NBA stars after winning the league’s Most Valuable Player award for a second straight season, according to a report from Shams Charania on Sunday.

OKC Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander celebrates his historic back-to-back Shai MVP award win.

The report said the National Basketball Association will officially announce the award later Sunday.

The league is expected to reveal the MVP winner at 7:30 p.m. ET during a broadcast on Amazon Prime Video.

If confirmed, the achievement would place Gilgeous-Alexander among a select list of players in NBA history to capture back-to-back MVP honors.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the star guard for the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder, has become just the fifth active player in the NBA to earn consecutive Most Valuable Player honors.

The achievement places Gilgeous-Alexander among a select group of current stars who have won the award in back-to-back seasons.

That list includes Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, and LeBron James.

James achieved the milestone twice during his career, first with the Cleveland Cavaliers and later while playing for the Miami Heat.

Every retired player in NBA history who captured consecutive MVP awards has later been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

That group includes Steve Nash, Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Moses Malone, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, and Bill Russell.

This season’s other MVP finalists were Nikola Jokić and Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder are set to face the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals.

The series opens with Game 1 on Monday in Oklahoma City. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, 27, delivered another standout regular season for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The All-Star guard finished second in the National Basketball Association scoring race, averaging 31.1 points per game.

He also posted a career-best 55.3% shooting from the field. Gilgeous-Alexander added a career-high 6.6 assists per game as Oklahoma City finished 64-18.

The Thunder ended the regular season with the league’s best record for the second straight year.

The reigning NBA Finals MVP also earned the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year award this season.

He led the league with 175 points scored in clutch situations.

The NBA defines clutch situations as games within five points during the final five minutes of regulation or overtime.

Gilgeous-Alexander also topped the league with 16 go-ahead field goals in clutch moments.

He finished first in clutch plus-minus at plus-93, underscoring his impact late in close games.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has now finished among the top five in National Basketball Association MVP voting for four consecutive seasons.

He placed fifth in the 2022–23 season and rose to second in 2023–24 before capturing the award in each of the last two years.

The sustained run has further established Gilgeous-Alexander as one of the league’s most consistent stars.

During that four-season stretch, he also reached a milestone not seen since Michael Jordan.

Gilgeous-Alexander became the first player since Jordan to average at least 30 points per game in four straight seasons.
