Patrick Bailey Trade: The Cleveland Guardians and San Francisco Giants are finalizing a rare early-season MLB trade, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The deal would send two-time Gold Glove catcher Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians from the San Francisco Giants.
In exchange, San Francisco is expected to receive the No. 29 overall selection in the 2026 MLB Draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson.
Trades involving major league players are uncommon during May, making the reported agreement a notable move for both clubs as the season progresses.
The trade marks a surprising decision for the San Francisco Giants, who are moving on from catcher Patrick Bailey despite his defensive success.
Bailey, 26, won the National League Gold Glove Award in each of the past two seasons.
His strong defensive play made him one of the league’s top catchers behind the plate.
However, Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey reportedly believed the organization needed a change at the position.
While Bailey remained highly regarded for his defense, he struggled to produce consistently at the plate.
His offensive difficulties became more noticeable during the opening weeks of the current season.
Through 30 games this season, Patrick Bailey has struggled offensively for the San Francisco Giants.
As of May 9, the catcher owns a .146 batting average with a .213 on-base percentage and a .183 slugging percentage.
His .396 OPS and 16 OPS+ reflect a difficult start at the plate. San Francisco has also faced broader offensive issues during the season.
The club entered May 9 with a 15-23 record while averaging just 3.16 runs per game, the lowest mark in Major League Baseball.
Following Bailey’s departure, rookies Daniel Susac and Jesus Rodriguez are expected to handle catching duties for the Giants.
Meanwhile, left-handed pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson heads to San Francisco as part of the reported trade package.
The 23-year-old has posted a 1-2 record with a 1.59 ERA at Double-A Akron this season.
Wilkinson has also recorded 36 strikeouts and nine walks across 28.1 innings for the Akron RubberDucks.
Left-handed pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson has also gained attention for his international experience and strong performances on the mound.
Representing Team Canada during the 2026 World Baseball Classic, Matt Wilkinson delivered an effective outing in limited action.
He allowed no hits over 2.2 innings while issuing two walks and striking out four batters.
Wilkinson is listed at 6-foot-1 and 250 pounds. His well-known “Tugboat” nickname dates back to his Little League years.
According to MLB.com, the nickname originated when a friend of Wilkinson’s father compared the young player’s pace while running the bases to the movement of a tugboat pulling larger ships.
The reported trade is also expected to reshape the catching situation for the Cleveland Guardians.
The arrival of Patrick Bailey would likely move Bo Naylor out of the team’s starting catcher role.
Naylor, 26, has served as Cleveland’s primary catcher over the past two seasons.
However, he has struggled offensively during the current campaign.
Through 28 games, Naylor is batting .143 with a .200 on-base percentage and a .238 slugging percentage.
According to Zack Meisel of The Athletic, the Guardians are expected to option Naylor to Triple-A once the trade becomes official.
