Kevon Looney: The Los Angeles Lakers have addressed a key roster need.
The team has agreed to terms with free agent center Kevon Looney. The deal is worth $3.9 million over one season.
ESPN's Shams Charania broke the news Tuesday. He reported that Looney's agent confirmed the agreement.
The Lakers reportedly beat out the New York Knicks for his services.
New York had been eyeing a third center to pair with Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond.
The signing comes at a pivotal moment for the Lakers' frontcourt. Los Angeles recently traded Deandre Ayton to the Washington Wizards.
The team also lost Jaxson Hayes to the Utah Jazz in free agency. Looney now steps in to fill that void.
His résumé speaks for itself. Looney won three NBA championships during his tenure with the Golden State Warriors.
He spent years setting screens for stars like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant. That experience should translate well in Los Angeles.
He's expected to run pick-and-roll sets for Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Rebounding has always been Looney's calling card.
He posted at least 10.0 rebounds per 40 minutes in nearly every season with the Warriors.
His best output came in 2024-25, his final year in the Bay Area, when he averaged 16.2 boards per 40 minutes.
Defense remains more of a question mark. Looney lacks the lateral quickness needed for versatile perimeter defense.
Even so, the 29-year-old's strengths off the bench should carve out a meaningful role.
He joins a Lakers roster now built around Doncic heading into next season.
