Brian Brobbey: Sunderland produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat Newcastle United 2–1 in the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park.

Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey scores a dramatic 90th-minute winning goal against Newcastle at St James' Park.

Newcastle United started the match strongly and took an early lead through Anthony Gordon.

His early goal gave the home side control in the first half and put Sunderland under pressure.

Sunderland responded after halftime with a more aggressive approach. The equalizer came 12 minutes into the second half when Chemsdine Talbi scored to bring the visitors level.

The match looked set to end in a draw as the clock moved into the final minutes. However, late drama changed the outcome.

Brian Brobbey scored in the 90th minute to complete the comeback and secure a famous derby victory for Sunderland.

The goal was Brobbey’s sixth of the season. It also marked Sunderland’s 10th away goal of the Premier League campaign.

The result completed a derby double over Newcastle and marked one of Sunderland’s most memorable wins of the season.

Newcastle United’s difficult week continued with another setback in the Tyne-Wear derby, adding to the disappointment of their recent European exit.

Only four days after their Champions League campaign ended with a heavy defeat in Barcelona, Newcastle United returned to domestic action with the clear aim of avenging their December derby loss to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

However, the result did not go in their favor. The defeat marked Newcastle’s eighth loss in their last 11 league matches, highlighting a difficult run of form at a crucial stage of the season.

The latest loss also dealt another blow to their hopes of qualifying for European competition next season. Newcastle’s struggles in the derby at home continued as well.

The club has not defeated Sunderland on Tyneside since October 2010, a record that remains unchanged after this latest result.

Sunderland continued their impressive return to the Premier League with another important result, despite traveling with an injury-hit squad.

The promoted side delivered a strong performance at St James' Park, further improving their chances of qualifying for European competition next season.

Sunderland have exceeded expectations in their first season back in the top flight, and this result added to their growing list of achievements this year.

The match, however, was briefly interrupted due to an incident involving discriminatory abuse.

Referee Anthony Taylor temporarily stopped play after Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida was reportedly targeted by abusive comments from the crowd.

Play resumed after a short delay, but the incident cast a shadow over an otherwise positive afternoon for Sunderland, who continued their strong Premier League campaign in front of a crowd of 52,253.

Newcastle United opened the scoring early after taking advantage of a mistake during Sunderland’s buildup from the back.

The move began when Nick Woltemade intercepted a misplaced pass from Luke O'Nien that had been intended for Granit Xhaka following a short goal kick.

The turnover created a quick attacking opportunity for the home side.

Anthony Gordon then drove forward and struck a low shot past goalkeeper Melker Ellborg to give Newcastle United the lead. The goal was Gordon’s 17th of the season.

Sunderland nearly responded with an equalizer after a well-worked attacking move.

Chemsdine Talbi brought down a long pass from Xhaka, cut inside onto his stronger foot, and sent a curling effort toward the top corner.

However, Aaron Ramsdale made an excellent fingertip save to push the ball away and keep Newcastle in front at that stage of the match.

Newcastle United created multiple opportunities to extend their advantage before halftime but were unable to convert their chances.

Shortly after taking the lead, Nick Woltemade sent a well-timed pass forward to Anthony Elanga, who had scored twice in Barcelona earlier in the week.

Elanga moved into space after drawing defender Omar Alderete, but his left-footed effort struck the side netting instead of doubling the lead.

Newcastle continued to threaten as halftime approached. Sven Botman came close when he met a corner from Lewis Hall, but his header struck the post.

The pace of the match increased in the closing minutes of the first half with both teams attacking.

Sunderland goalkeeper Melker Ellborg later gathered a free-kick effort from Hall during stoppage time, ensuring the score remained unchanged heading into the break.

Sunderland began the second half with clear intent and immediately put Newcastle’s defense under pressure.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was forced to react quickly when Chris Rigg fired a shot toward the near post, and Ramsdale managed to push the effort away. The save briefly kept Newcastle United in front.

The pressure continued from the resulting corner. Ramsdale struggled to deal with the delivery into the box, creating a scramble in front of goal.

Dan Burn blocked a close-range attempt from Brian Brobbey on the goal line after a cross from Trai Hume. However, the ball fell loose inside the penalty area.

Chemsdine Talbi reacted first and scored from close range to equalize for Sunderland, bringing the visitors level early in the second half.

Sunderland continued to apply pressure in the second half as the match became increasingly open with chances for both sides.

A shot from Granit Xhaka in the 62nd minute took a deflection and looped onto the top of the net, highlighting Sunderland’s growing attacking threat.

The visitors began to push forward more aggressively as they searched for a second goal.

Newcastle responded with an opportunity of their own. Sunderland goalkeeper Melker Ellborg made an important save to deny substitute Jacob Murphy after a quick attacking move from Newcastle United.

Sunderland continued to test the Newcastle defense. Noah Sadiki struck a powerful effort in the 69th minute, but Aaron Ramsdale reacted well to make the save.

Newcastle came close to scoring when Joe Willock saw his shot deflect off Lutsharel Geertruida and drift just wide of the post, leaving Ellborg relieved as the ball missed the target.

Newcastle United had the ball in the net late in the match, but the goal was ruled out, and the decision ultimately proved decisive.

Substitute Malick Thiaw appeared to score from a corner delivered by Lewis Hall with around 15 minutes remaining.

However, the referee disallowed the goal after determining there had been a foul on Sunderland goalkeeper Melker Ellborg during the set piece.

With the score still level, the match moved toward a dramatic conclusion. Sunderland eventually found the winning goal in the closing moments.

Substitute Enzo Le Fée sent a cross into the penalty area that was only partially dealt with by Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The loose ball fell to Brian Brobbey, who reacted quickly and scored from close range to secure a late victory for Sunderland.
