Terence Crawford Stripped: Terence Crawford has been stripped of his WBC super-middleweight title after the sanctioning body ruled that he failed to pay the required fees.
The decision removes the undefeated star from the top spot in the division, leaving the championship up for grabs.
With the belt now vacant, the WBC has approved a new matchup to determine its next champion.
British contender Hamzah Sheeraz, who holds a 22-1 record with 18 knockouts, will face Christian Mbilli for the title.
The fight is expected to be scheduled soon, with final details on the date and venue still to be announced.
Terence Crawford, who became the undisputed super-middleweight champion after defeating Canelo Álvarez earlier this year, has now been stripped of the WBC belt.
The WBC said it reduced Crawford’s sanctioning fee for the lucrative Canelo fight, cutting the usual 3 percent rate down to 0.6 percent because of his reported $50 million payout.
Even with that discount, the organization said Crawford did not submit the required payment.
According to the WBC, Crawford had already been warned about overdue fees from his previous two bouts, including his fights against Israil Madrimov and Álvarez.
The decision leaves the WBC title vacant as the sanctioning body moves forward with plans for a new championship bout.
The WBC said it repeatedly reached out to Terence Crawford, his manager, and his legal team before making its decision.
According to the sanctioning body, none of those messages were acknowledged or answered, forcing officials to move forward with disciplinary action.
The organization said it was left with “no choice” but to strip him of the title. Crawford remains one of boxing’s most accomplished champions.
He has captured world titles in five weight divisions and achieved undisputed status in three of them, all while preserving an undefeated career record.
Hamzah Sheeraz is set to compete for the WBC super-middleweight title recently stripped from Terence Crawford, giving the British contender a chance to become the nation’s next world champion.
To claim the belt, Sheeraz will have to get past Christian Mbilli, the Cameroon-born and Canada-based challenger who brings a 29-0-1 record and 24 knockouts into the fight.
Sheeraz has looked strong since moving up to super middleweight. Earlier this year, he convincingly stopped Edgar Berlanga, underscoring his rise in the division.
He previously fought for the WBC middleweight crown but settled for a draw against Carlos Adames.
After dropping his professional debut, Sheeraz has put together an impressive run, winning 22 straight fights to earn another world title opportunity.
