Marshall Faulk College: Marshall Faulk is expected to take over as the next head coach at Southern University, according to a source with direct knowledge of the decision.
The move would put the Hall of Fame running back in charge of the FCS program based in Baton Rouge.
Contract details are still being finalized. If the deal is completed, Faulk would return to Louisiana, where he was born and raised, marking a homecoming after his first year in college coaching.
Faulk spent the past season at Colorado, serving as the running backs coach under head coach Deion Sanders.
Both men are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. NFL reporter Jordan Schultz was the first to report that Southern is expected to select Faulk for the job.
Marshall Faulk would become part of a growing wave of former NFL stars stepping into head coaching roles at HBCUs, a path already taken by Deion Sanders, Eddie George, DeSean Jackson, and Michael Vick.
Faulk’s rise began in New Orleans, where he excelled at Carver High School.
Many college programs viewed him as a defensive back, but San Diego State offered him the chance to play running back, a role he believed suited his skills.
He quickly proved that decision right. In just his second college game, Faulk erupted for 386 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, setting NCAA freshman records in both categories.
Over three seasons at San Diego State, Faulk totaled 5,562 all-purpose yards and scored 62 touchdowns, cementing his place as one of the nation’s top players.
He nearly claimed college football’s highest honor in 1992, finishing second in the Heisman Trophy voting behind Miami quarterback Gino Torretta.
Marshall Faulk entered the NFL as the No. 2 overall pick in the 1994 draft, joining the Indianapolis Colts. He quickly made his presence felt and earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
The Colts traded Faulk to the St. Louis Rams in 1999, a move that helped elevate the team into one of the most explosive offenses the league had ever seen. That unit would soon be known as the “Greatest Show on Turf.”
The Rams went on to defeat the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV, securing the franchise’s first championship since 1951.
Faulk remained a central figure in the team’s success.
He won the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award in 2000 and claimed Offensive Player of the Year honors for three consecutive seasons from 1999 to 2001.
