Mac Jones, 49ers: Athletes don’t need much to spark motivation. The 49ers found plenty of it on Thursday night.
Oddsmakers pushed the spread from three points to 8.5, putting the Rams firmly in control before kickoff.
Instead, the 49ers walked away with a 26-23 overtime victory. Afterward, Mac Jones was asked what it felt like to be the underdog in a division clash.
“I don’t really follow that kind of stuff,” Jones said. “I’m not on social media much. But Coach Shanahan came up to me, and he was fired up.
He said, ‘Can you believe they’ve made us underdogs again?’ I just laughed and told him I didn’t really get it, but I was ready to go.
He was mad. And I told him, ‘Yeah, I’m mad too.’” Jones sounded a bit sarcastic. Shanahan, on the other hand, appeared dead serious.
Whatever the case, the approach worked. The 49ers came through, even while missing important players.
