This special honor will occur during their Week 9 game against the Seahawks. The ceremony is scheduled for Sunday Night Football.

It’s a fitting tribute to one of the franchise’s all-time greats. No Washington player has worn Art Monk’s No. 81 since he left the team in 1993.

His legacy has remained untouched for decades. Monk is also part of the franchise’s Ring of Fame.

He still holds the team records for most receptions (888) and most receiving yards (12,026). Those numbers speak volumes about his impact on the field.

"I won’t pretend I did it all alone," Monk said in a chat with Zach Selby from the Commanders’ website. "A big part of the credit goes to my teammates."

"At the end of the day, football is all about teamwork." "None of us could succeed without the others doing their part."

Art Monk earned his place in the Hall of Fame back in 2008. He was a three-time Super Bowl champion.

He also made the Pro Bowl three times.
And he was named a first-team All-Pro once. His career was nothing short of legendary.

Art Monk is now the sixth Washington legend to have his jersey number retired.
It’s a special honor, and one that puts him in great company.

He joins Darrell Green (28), Sammy Baugh (33), Sonny Jurgensen (9), Bobby Mitchell (49), and Sean Taylor (21). Each name on that list holds a lasting place in team history.
