Evangeline Lilly: Evangeline Lilly has explained why she left acting while her career was thriving.
Her reason is simple. She never liked being famous.
The 47-year-old Canadian actor rose to fame on ABC's hit drama Lost.
The show ran for six seasons, from 2004 to 2010.
Lilly has said she effectively retired from acting in 2020, though she completed filming for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in 2021.
She made her public retirement announcement in 2024.
The timing surprised many fans. Just a year earlier, she had returned as Hope van Dyne, also known as the Wasp, in Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The film earned $476 million worldwide.
A quieter life
Lilly recently spoke about her choice in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network.
She said she prefers a quieter role in life. She also said she has never hidden her dislike of fame.
In her view, fame is the price actors pay for wealth. It comes with the job. She never wanted that part of it.
A long adjustment
Leaving the industry was not easy. Lilly said the adjustment took a long time.
She said that when she was 26, she had already reached everything she wanted in life.
In her mind, she was done long before she made it official.
Still, the decision carried real fear. Walking away meant giving up power, influence and potential earnings. She admitted that felt frightening.
She also described how good success can feel. The world applauds you. The praise is hard to ignore. Leaving that behind is difficult.
There were moments when panic set in. She questioned what she was doing. Even so, she said she made the decision with great conviction.
A different path
Lilly's interests were never limited to acting. Before her screen career, she studied political science and international relations.
She once considered becoming a missionary, a humanitarian or a diplomat.
Her goal was always to make the world better. She acknowledged that many people believe actors do that.
Some fans say performers have changed their lives.
Lilly wanted something more direct. She wanted hands-on impact. She said she has spent 22 years doing humanitarian work in Rwanda.
What comes next
Helping others remains a top priority for the Hobbit and Avengers: Endgame actor. Storytelling is still part of her life, too. She said she loves it.
But she wants to tell her own stories now. She would rather do that than stand in front of the camera.
