David Krumholtz: David Krumholtz was missing from a big reunion. Now he is explaining why.
The actor could not travel to Los Angeles for Tuesday's "Dancing With the Stars" episode.
His former "10 Things I Hate About You" castmates took the stage without him.
Krumholtz shared the news in a video message. He said he was in upstate New York shooting a movie. He wore a beanie and a jacket as he spoke.
"I would have loved loved loved to have been there," he said.
The night was "Dedication Night." Julia Stiles used it to honor her late co-star Heath Ledger. She invited the cast of the 1999 rom-com to join her.
Krumholtz, 48, praised the whole evening. He said everyone looked amazing. He called Stiles' tribute "stunning." He also said he was proud of her.
He spoke warmly about Ledger, too. "I miss him every single day," he said of his dear friend.
The actor also had kind words for the returning cast. He said they still look young.
He named Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, Gabrielle Union, Andrew Keegan and Susan May Pratt.
Stiles, 45, performed a contemporary dance with pro partner Ezra Sosa, 25. The song was Frankie Valli's 1967 hit "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." Ledger's character sang it to hers in the film, which Gil Junger directed.
Before the performance, a pre-recorded video aired. In it, Stiles spoke about her late co-star. She said she learned a lot from Ledger. She called him authentic.
She also admitted the memories bring sadness. She wishes she could call him today.
She would tell him how much people still care about the movie. She would tell him they made something special.
When the dance ended, her castmates walked onto the floor. They joined her in front of a photo of Ledger.
The judges gave Stiles and Sosa a score of 36 out of 40.
In the film, Stiles plays Kat. She is an anti-social high schooler. Kat falls for Patrick, an outgoing Australian student played by Ledger.
Ledger died in 2008 from an accidental overdose. He was 28. He had just wrapped Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight."
He was also filming "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," which came out in 2009.
He is survived by his daughter, Matilda Rose. She is now nearly 21 years old. Her mother is actress Michelle Williams.
