The Diplomat Season 5: Kate and Hal Wyler just walked away from the White House. Now fans want to know what comes next.
Season 4 of Netflix's "The Diplomat" ends with a major shake-up.
Several key characters quit President Grace Penn's administration in public.
The fallout has not been shown yet. A fifth season would have to deliver it.
Is Season 5 happening?
Netflix has not renewed the Emmy-winning drama. It has not canceled it either.
Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford stayed quiet on the topic in recent interviews with USA TODAY.
When could it premiere?
The series has kept a steady schedule. Season 1 arrived in spring 2023. Seasons 2 through 4 each landed in the fall of the following years.
If Netflix gives the green light, a fall 2027 return looks likely. Production schedules could push it later.
How Season 4 ends
Kate Wyler, played by Russell, ends the season at odds with President Penn, played by Janney.
The president makes risky moves with global stakes. She threatens to effectively invade U.K. territorial waters.
The goal is to keep Russia from learning that the U.S. took a doomsday nuclear weapon from right under the Kremlin's nose.
Kate sees a dangerous path. She fears it could break up traditional Western alliances, including NATO.
She also fears it could push the world toward World War III with Russia.
Her second-in-command, Stuart Heyford, played by Ato Essandoh, agrees.
He files an official dissent cable against the president's plan. Penn responds with force. She has Stuart pushed out.
Kate now faces a clear choice between loyalty and morality. She picks morality. She resigns, and she does it publicly.
Others follow her out the door. Chief of staff Billie Appiah, played by Nana Mensah, quits.
So does Secretary of State Miguel Ganon, played by Miguel Sandoval.
The most striking exit comes from Kate's husband, Hal Wyler, played by Sewell. Hal is the vice president of the United States.
What would Season 5 be about?
The stars say they have no answers. Russell told USA TODAY the cast is "totally in the dark."
She said four seasons have never let her down. She would not want to steer the story in any direction.
Sewell shared the same attitude. He said nothing can disappoint the cast.
The writers could split Kate and Hal apart or keep them together.
They could put the couple in power or out of it. His response was simple. "Bring it on."
