FIFA World Cup Final: The moment has arrived. Lionel Messi and Argentina face Lamine Yamal and Spain in the World Cup final.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. EDT at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Argentina is chasing its fourth World Cup title.
Spain is going for its second. A win would also make Spain the first nation to hold both the men's and women's World Cup titles at the same time. Sunday's final marks the 104th match of this tournament.
This year's World Cup expanded to 48 teams. Games were played across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The larger format meant more matches than any previous World Cup.
It also produced more goals than any past tournament. Entering the final, the goal count stood at 307.
A high-scoring final could make history. If Argentina and Spain combine for two or more goals, this World Cup will post the highest goals-per-game average since 1956. That tournament averaged 3.6 goals per match.
Even a lower-scoring final would still mark the best average since the 1970 World Cup, which saw 2.97 goals per game.
The event extends well beyond the field. Post Malone will headline the closing ceremony, set to begin 90 minutes before kickoff. FIFA is also hosting its first-ever halftime show.
Headliners include Justin Bieber, Madonna, Shakira and BTS. Burna Boy and Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel will also perform.
The lineup includes the PS 22 Chorus alongside Coldplay, plus appearances from Sesame Street and Muppets characters.
President Donald Trump is expected to attend the final. Plans call for him to take part in the trophy presentation once the match ends.
On the field, Argentina will wear its traditional light blue and white vertical stripes.
Spain will play in red jerseys with navy sleeves. A Slovenian crew will officiate the match.
