Denny Hamlin: Denny Hamlin has done it again.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver captured the pole position for Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.
It marks the track's first Cup Series event in seven years.
Hamlin posted a lap time of 30.296 seconds during Saturday's qualifying session. His top speed reached 178.241 mph.
The margin was razor-thin. Kyle Larson finished just behind him in second place.
Larson's No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet clocked a lap time of 30.297 seconds. His top speed came in at 178.235 mph.
The pole marks Hamlin's third consecutive top qualifying spot on an oval track.
He now has four poles this season driving the No. 11 Toyota. The result also pushes his career total to 52 poles.
That number moves him past Ryan Newman and into sole possession of ninth place on NASCAR's all-time list. RFK Racing had a strong showing in the session.
Chris Buescher qualified third with a speed of 178.153 mph. His teammate, Brad Keselowski, followed in fourth at 178.089 mph.
Ty Gibbs rounded out the top five, posting a speed of 178.083 mph heading into Sunday's race.
