Serena Williams: Serena Williams steps back onto the singles court Tuesday. It marks her first singles appearance since stepping away from the sport in 2022.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion made her official tour comeback earlier this month.
She teamed up with Canadian player Victoria Mboko in doubles at the HSBC Championships.
The duo won their opening match. They were forced out in the second round after Mboko suffered an injury.
Williams received a wild-card entry into the Wimbledon singles draw. She will also team up with her older sister, Venus Williams, in doubles.
The sisters earned an invitation to play together at the All England Club. Together, they hold 14 major doubles titles. Six of those wins came at Wimbledon.
Venus Williams has remained active on the WTA Tour. She reached the doubles quarterfinals at the 2025 U.S. Open.
She partnered with Leylah Fernandez for that run. In singles, Serena Williams will face 20-year-old Australian player Maya Joint.
Joint is currently ranked No. 87 in the world. She is chasing her first career win past the first round at Wimbledon.
Standing in her way is a seven-time Wimbledon champion. Williams last lifted the trophy in 2016.
She holds a career record of 98-14 at the tournament. Her most recent appearance ended in a first-round exit in 2022.
Williams never called her 2022 departure a retirement. She described it instead as an evolution.
She explained her decision in a Vogue essay that year. She said the word evolution best captured her shift away from tennis.
She added that she was moving toward other priorities in her life. Since then, Williams has welcomed her second child.
She has also taken on a high-profile endorsement campaign for a GLP-1 medication.
Her decision to enter the singles draw came together quickly. It followed shortly after her doubles appearance was confirmed.
She addressed the decision during a press session Sunday, according to the WTA. She said opportunities like a Wimbledon wild card do not come often.
She noted only a handful of players have ever received one. She said she felt compelled to seize the moment.
She acknowledged she may never get another chance to play at Wimbledon. She closed by saying this could be her final appearance.
