Heat Advisory: The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for most of Northeast Ohio, set to begin at noon on Tuesday, June 30, and remain in effect through 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 2.

The primary driver behind the dangerous conditions is an upper-level ridge of high pressure expanding over the region.

Meteorologists commonly call this phenomenon a heat dome.

It works by trapping a large bubble of hot, humid air beneath it, much like a lid on a pot, preventing the heat from escaping.

Temperatures on Monday are expected to climb to around 90 degrees.

From Tuesday through Thursday, highs will push well into the mid-to-upper 90s. The danger, however, goes beyond raw temperature readings.

Elevated humidity levels will cause heat index values — the "feels like" temperature — to exceed 100 degrees during peak afternoon hours.

The National Weather Service has warned that heat indices could reach between 100 and 110 degrees across parts of Ohio, posing particular risks for the elderly and those with respiratory conditions.

The stretch of heat is also expected to challenge long-standing records.

According to the National Center for Environmental Prediction, more than 60 record high temperatures are forecast to be tied or broken between Tuesday and Thursday across the continental United States.

Overnight temperatures will offer little relief. Lows are expected to settle in the mid-to-upper 70s, leaving residents with minimal recovery time between sweltering days.

The pattern is forecast to shift heading into the holiday weekend. The upper-level ridge should begin weakening by the end of the week, easing the most extreme heat for the Fourth of July.

A shift in the jet stream is expected to push the heat dome back toward the Plains, allowing cooler air and more frequent thunderstorms to spread into the region.

At this point, Friday appears to carry the highest chance of rainfall during the weekend period.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors throughout the advisory period.
