Chicago opened the season strongly but has slipped to 29-22 following its recent struggles.

The losing streak has left the Cubs 2.5 games behind the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central standings.

One of the key issues during the downturn has been the team's inconsistent offensive production.

The Cubs have struggled to generate runs, contributing to their slide in the standings. In response, the organization announced a roster change on Friday.

Chicago designated veteran infielder Nicky Lopez for assignment and promoted highly regarded prospect Kevin Alcantara to the major league roster.

Alcantara, a 23-year-old outfielder, is considered one of the Cubs' top prospects.

His promotion gives Chicago a potential boost as the club attempts to end its losing streak and regain momentum in the NL Central race.

Cubs Promote Top Prospect Kevin Alcantara as Offensive Struggles Continue

The Chicago Cubs made a roster move Saturday in an effort to strengthen their lineup amid ongoing offensive difficulties.

The club announced that outfielder Kevin Alcantara has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa. At the same time, veteran infielder Nicky Lopez was designated for assignment.

The move comes as Chicago's offense continues to search for consistency. The Cubs have scored just four runs over their last three games.

Since May 9, the team has been shut out twice and has failed to score more than three runs in 10 of its past 12 contests. Lopez had a limited role during his time with the major league club.

He received only five at-bats and went hitless in those opportunities. Alcantara now takes his place on the active roster.

The 23-year-old outfielder is widely regarded as one of the organization's top prospects and could provide a much-needed boost as the Cubs look to improve their offensive production.

Kevin Alcantara Earns Another MLB Opportunity After Strong Triple-A Season

Top prospect Kevin Alcantara has earned another chance at the major league level following an impressive performance in Triple-A this season.

The 23-year-old outfielder has posted a .906 OPS while batting .242. He has also recorded 15 home runs, 32 RBIs, and three stolen bases.

Alcantara has consistently produced throughout his minor league career. Since making his professional debut in 2019, he has compiled an .814 OPS across 2,056 at-bats.

The latest promotion marks the third major league call-up of his career. Alcantara made limited appearances with Chicago in 2024 and 2025.

During his first stint in the majors in 2024, he posted a .200 OPS in 10 at-bats. He showed improvement during his 2025 appearance, registering a .781 OPS across 11 at-bats.

With his strong Triple-A production and continued development, Alcantara now returns to the major league roster looking to make a larger impact.

Cubs Look to Kevin Alcantara for Offensive Boost Amid Recent Slump

The Chicago Cubs are hoping newly promoted outfielder Kevin Alcantara can provide a spark for an offense that has struggled during the club's recent downturn.

Chicago has dropped six consecutive games and lost 10 of its last 12 contests. Offensive inconsistency has been a major factor in the team's slide.

Alcantara's arrival adds another option to a roster that already features established outfielders Ian Happ, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Seiya Suzuki. His role in the lineup remains uncertain.

Chicago also has additional offensive pieces, including Moisés Ballesteros and Michael Conforto, who have been part of the designated hitter mix.

As Alcantara joins the major league roster, attention will turn to how manager Craig Counsell integrates the highly regarded prospect into the team's lineup rotation.

His playing time and usage could become an important storyline as the Cubs attempt to reverse their recent struggles and regain momentum.
