Giants Fire Shane Bowen: The New York Giants have removed defensive coordinator Shane Bowen from his role, according to information shared with ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

New York Giants interim coach Mike Kafka announces the decision to Giants fire Shane Bowen after playoff elimination and five blown leads.

Interim head coach Mike Kafka made the decision after Sunday’s overtime loss to the Detroit Lions, where New York surrendered a double-digit lead and fell 34-27.

The defeat marked the team’s sixth straight loss and pushed the Giants to a 2-10 record.

With the result, New York became the first team officially eliminated from playoff contention. It was also the fifth time this season the Giants failed to protect a fourth-quarter lead.

Outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen has been elevated to interim defensive coordinator, according to reports confirmed by ESPN. The development was first reported by veteran NFL journalist Josina Anderson.

The change comes on the heels of the Giants’ overtime loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. That defeat extended New York’s road losing streak to 12 games, the longest stretch of its kind in team history.

All five of the Giants’ blown double-digit leads this season have occurred on the road, adding to mounting pressure on the organization as the season continues.

The New York Giants have dropped to 2-5 in games where they built a double-digit lead, continuing a season marked by late-game collapses. No team in the league has lost more games after leading in the fourth quarter.

One of those defeats came last month in Denver, where the Giants became the first team since at least 1970 to lose in regulation after holding an 18-point advantage with only six minutes remaining.

Shane Bowen, 38, joined the franchise following the 2023 season after being hired by former head coach Brian Daboll. He replaced Wink Martindale as defensive coordinator.

Prior to his time in New York, Bowen spent six seasons with the Tennessee Titans, including three leading their defense.
