Jaxon Smith-Njigba Seahawks: Seattle’s lead was only seven. With nearly six minutes still to play, the game was far from decided.
The Seahawks started fresh from their own 47-yard line. For Jaxon Smith-Njigba, it felt like the perfect moment to call “X Blazer.”
“I wanted that play earlier,” Smith-Njigba said in a phone call with PFT after the game. “I told Sam Darnold in the first half—if it opens up, we need to run it.”
Before the snap, Smith-Njigba spotted the Steelers showing a single-high safety. He read it as a clear sign they were bracing for a run.
Seattle lined up in the same look they had used on an earlier rushing play, which sold the disguise. That gave Smith-Njigba the opening to blow past Jalen Ramsey and pull in a 43-yard gain.
“I don’t think he expected me to go deep,” Smith-Njigba said. Once the ball was in the air, the task was clear. “See the ball. Get the ball.”
That’s been his approach for two straight weeks. He posted nine catches for 124 yards in Week 1. Then came back with eight grabs for 103 in Week 2.
The biggest play was a 43-yarder that set up the touchdown sealing Seattle’s 31-17 win over Pittsburgh.
