Pete DeBoer Fired: Pete DeBoer has been fired as head coach of the Dallas Stars. He spent three seasons with the team. In each of those years, the Stars made it to the Western Conference Final.
But they couldn’t take the next step to reach the Stanley Cup Final. That consistent shortfall led to his dismissal on Friday.
Just days after the season ended, Jim Nill took action. The Stars had lost 6-3 at home to Edmonton in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final.
That loss ended their playoff run. Less than a week later, the general manager decided to make a coaching change.
Jim Nill said the decision wasn’t easy. But after a lot of thought, the team felt it was time for a new voice in the locker room.
They believe fresh leadership is needed to help them take the next step toward the Stanley Cup. He thanked Pete DeBoer for his hard work over the past three seasons. Nill also wished him the very best in whatever comes next.
Dallas now shares a tough piece of history. They’ve become just the second team in the expansion era to fall one round short of the Stanley Cup Final three years in a row. The only other team to do that was the Islanders from 1975 to 1977.
Pete DeBoer faced criticism for an early decision in Game 5 against Edmonton. He pulled goalie Jake Oettinger just seven minutes into the game.
Oettinger had allowed two goals on the first two shots. Still, many questioned the move. Oettinger had been one of the top goaltenders all season. In the playoffs, no goalie had faced more shots than him.
Jake Oettinger admitted he felt shocked and embarrassed by the early pull. Pete DeBoer understood the risk. He knew if the move backfired, tough questions would follow. At the time of his firing, DeBoer still had one year remaining on his contract.
