San Diego Padres Roster: To improve their starting rotation, the San Diego Padres have taken an important step. Nick Pivetta, an experienced right-hander, has signed a four-year, $55 million contract with them.

Nick Pivetta joins San Diego Padres roster in $55M deal.

Jeff Passan of ESPN was the first to announce the transaction, which helps the team fill an urgent need as they get ready for their next season.

Contract Details and Payroll Strategy

The Padres' cost is intended to be lessened by Pivetta's contract.

Opt-outs are available after the second and third years of the agreement. It has an important backload as well.

In 2025, he will only be paid $1 million, but he will receive a $3 million signing bonus. In the upcoming years, his pay will rise.

The Padres are able to better control their budget because of this system. The squad is already projected to make $194 million in 2025.

That is around $30 million more than they made on Opening Day of the previous year.

The team keeps flexibility for future movements by paying Pivetta a low wage in the first year.

Pivetta’s Role in the Rotation

Pivetta provides the Padres with experience and reliability. He has been a reliable player for the Boston Red Sox for the last four seasons.

He pitched 156 innings a season on average throughout that time, having an ERA of 4.33.

He had a great strikeout rate of 26.9%. He recorded a 4.14 ERA over 145⅔ innings in 2023. At 6.1%, he also had the lowest walk rate of his career.

Pivetta is probably going to be the Padres' fourth starter. He joins Michael King, Yu Darvish, and Dylan Cease.

Other contenders for the fifth position include Randy Vasquez and Matt Waldron.

For the Padres, this deal is very important. Joe Musgrove will miss the full season due to his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Padres’ Offseason Approach

This summer, general manager A.J. Preller has taken a mindful approach. Prior to Pivetta's signing, the team had only made a few minor moves.

They signed catcher Elias Diaz again in January. Also, they signed $1 million contracts with outfielders Jason Heyward and Connor Joe. A left-field platoon is what they are supposed to form.
