Black Doves Season 2: Netflix's spy thriller is back. "Black Doves" returned for Season 2 on Thursday, Nov. 5. Critics say it has not missed a beat.
The series holds a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. That matches Season 1.
The new score rests on fewer reviews, though. Audience scores for Season 2 are not in yet. Season 1 earned a 65% audience score.
Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw lead the cast. It is Knightley's biggest role in years.
Netflix's global reach adds to the show's profile. Whishaw may look familiar, too. He played Q in the Daniel Craig James Bond films.
Season 2 follows Knightley's character, Helen. She still passes her nation's secrets to the Black Doves, a covert group.
Last Christmas brought plenty of trouble. Now her husband, Wallace, played by Andrew Buchan, is preparing to become prime minister. Helen is walking a riskier line than ever.
The early numbers are mixed. The show debuted in 10th place on the U.S. Top 10 list. That is a concern.
The reason is likely the wait. Nearly two years have passed since Season 1 arrived in December 2024.
Long breaks are tough on any series. They are tougher on a show that is well liked but not Netflix's biggest hit.
A simple "we're back" announcement is not enough. The show may still climb the chart in time.
Writer Joe Barton addressed the gap publicly on X.
Barton says the complaint is fair. No show creator wants a long wait between seasons. Fixing it would mean renewing shows far earlier than most broadcasters are comfortable with. He admits it is frustrating when the gap takes over the conversation. But he says there is little anyone can do.
Barton also explained what a Season 3 would need. Say Netflix wanted it out in November 2027.
Writing would have started while Season 2 was filming. The show would have been renewed a year ago.
Cameras would be rolling right now. They are not.
It is too early to know how Season 2 will perform. Even if it earns a third season, fans should expect another long wait.
