Kate Middleton or Catherine? The Name Debate Behind Kylie Kelce's Apology

Kate Middleton: Kylie Kelce is getting a crash course in royal etiquette. The podcast host recently apologized for how she addressed the Princess of Wales.

She did it on her show, "Not Gonna Lie."

Kelce, 34, is married to retired NFL star Jason Kelce, 38. On her Sept. 24 episode, she invited the princess to join her for a chat.

She named field hockey and kids as topics they could cover. "We got a couple things in common," she said.

She also noted that their husbands had already crossed paths on a podcast. Prince William appeared in July on "New Heights," which Jason hosts with his brother, Travis Kelce.

Kelce revisited the invitation on her Thursday, Oct. 1 episode. By then, she had learned more about the princess's formal name and title.

"I was unaware that calling Princess Catherine, Princess Kate was offensive," she said. "Now I know that.

Now I will proceed accordingly." She added that she wants to address people in the most respectful way possible.

She then spoke directly to the royal. "Princess Catherine or the Princess of Wales, I apologize," she said. She promised to fix it right away.

Kate vs. Catherine

The princess's formal title is Catherine, Princess of Wales. The public has known her as Kate Middleton for more than two decades.

That name dates to her relationship with Prince William, well before their 2011 wedding. It is still the name most people use when searching for her online.

The debate over her name is not new. In 2008, two years before William proposed, she reportedly emailed close friends and asked them to call her Catherine.

Royal biographer Robert Jobson addressed the email in his book "Catherine, the Princess of Wales."

He wrote that it was unclear whether the request was a personal preference or part of her preparation for a bigger public role. By then, the name Kate Middleton was already widely known.

Kate and William, both 44, became the Princess and Prince of Wales in September 2022. That followed the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

King Charles III announced that William would take the title he had held. Kate became the Princess of Wales, a title long associated with William's late mother, Princess Diana.

A Language Check

Kelce said she may need to make one more adjustment if the princess accepts. She would have to tone down her language.

A commenter had written that the princess is "too refined and beautiful" to be subjected to her cursing. Kelce agreed. "You're correct," she said.

She stressed that the invitation comes with no strings attached. "I don't think that anybody owes me anything," she said.

She called the princess an incredible woman. She cited her children, her field hockey background and her battle with cancer as reasons she would love to talk with her.

Kelce is also realistic about the odds. "Do I think she has time to hop on this podcast? No, I do not," she said.

She says she can rein in her colorful vocabulary when the moment calls for it. "Would I curse at her face? No," she said.

She admitted she loves a good curse word. Even so, she said she stays respectful of the people she is speaking with.

A Star-Studded Guest List

Kelce's podcast won a Webby Award in May. Past guests include former first lady Michelle Obama.

Actors Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Garner have appeared, as have singers Kelly Clarkson and Hilary Duff.

The Kelces and the royals have crossed paths before. William's "New Heights" appearance was not the only link.

In June 2024, he took his eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, to see Taylor Swift perform on the Eras Tour in London. Swift is Kylie Kelce's sister-in-law.
