The Equalizer 3: "The Equalizer 3" has landed on Netflix. It is already climbing the streaming charts.
The 2023 action thriller is now the fifth most popular film on the platform worldwide.
That ranking was accurate at the time of reporting. A controversial Unabomber biopic holds the top spot.
"The Mummy" also sits in the top 10. A new sequel to that film is currently in production.
Netflix is now the streaming home of the "Equalizer" franchise. The series stars Denzel Washington as Robert McCall.
McCall is a mysterious former soldier and assassin. He wants to leave his violent past behind.
The franchise began in 2014. It was not an instant hit. Over time, it built a loyal following.
In the first film, McCall steps in to save a young girl from mobsters. That act ends his quiet life.
The third film takes him to Italy. There, he learns that his new friends are under the thumb of the local mafia. Only McCall can stop them.
Critics were lukewarm on the first film. It earned a 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were warmer, giving it 77%.
The 2018 sequel, "The Equalizer 2," is widely seen as the weakest entry. It scored 52% with critics and 62% with audiences.
Expectations were low for the third film. It beat them. Critics gave it a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences gave it a 94% rating.
That success is fueling more films. Washington, 71, and director Antoine Fuqua are returning for "The Equalizer 4."
The project is in active development. The pair are also planning a fifth film. That plan could change if the fourth movie underperforms in theaters.
