Bruce Springsteen: Tom Morello's Power to the People Festival delivered a night of surprise collaborations.
The biggest moment came from Bruce Springsteen. He performed Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World."
Dave Grohl, Dave Matthews and Morello backed him on stage.
Springsteen's set leaned on protest anthems. He played only one original song. It was "Streets of Minneapolis." Guests joined him throughout the show.
Joan Baez appeared for a cover of Bob Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom."
Matthews and Nathaniel Rateliff helped with Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son." Springsteen had not played that song live since 2009.
Grohl came out right after that number. His band, Foo Fighters, had performed earlier in the evening. He then joined Springsteen for the Young classic.
The performance was a long-awaited return. Springsteen last played "Rockin' in the Free World" live in 2004.
That night, he sang it with Young himself. R.E.M. and John Fogerty also took part. The event was a Vote for Change concert in Minnesota.
That concert closed with an all-star version of Patti Smith's "People Have the Power." Morello's festival ended in a similar way.
Stars gathered for John Lennon's "Power to the People." The song gave the festival its name.
The full ensemble then played an extended version of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land."
Springsteen was not the only act with surprise guests. Jack Black's Black Sabbath tribute act brought out Geezer Butler.
Public Enemy invited Scott Ian of Anthrax for "Bring the Noise." The lineup also included a "Suns of Soundgarden" mini-set.
Morello's own set featured a long guest list. It included Serj Tankian, DMC and B-Real of Cypress Hill.
Public Enemy joined in as well. Grohl returned to play Kiss' "Rock and Roll All Nite" with Morello.
