Top Gun Maverick: Tom Cruise's top-grossing film is having another moment on streaming.
"Top Gun: Maverick" has landed the No. 2 spot on Netflix's movie chart.
It outranked several newer, high-profile titles now competing for viewers.
A Surprise Return to the Top Ranks
FlixPatrol's newest data confirms the film's climb. The tracker places "Top Gun: Maverick" as Netflix's second most-watched movie in the United States.
It currently sits ahead of titles including "Best of the Best," "The Seemingly Perfect Family," "Why Did I Get Married Again?," "The Matchmaker's Playbook" and "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish."
Behind the Film's Success
Paramount Pictures released the sequel in theaters on May 27, 2022. Joseph Kosinski directed the film.
Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie wrote the screenplay.
Cruise starred alongside Jennifer Connelly and Miles Teller. He also produced the film with McQuarrie, Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison.
The Story Behind the Sequel
The film follows Pete "Maverick" Mitchell decades after his early Navy days. He's no longer the reckless young pilot fans first met.
After more than 30 years of service, Maverick returns to Top Gun as an instructor. His task: train a new generation of elite aviators for a high-risk mission.
One of his students is Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw. He's the son of Maverick's late friend, Goose.
Mentoring Rooster forces Maverick to confront unresolved guilt. At the same time, he must prepare his students for a mission that leaves no room for error.
Box Office and Critical Reception
The film had a production budget of roughly $177 million. It went on to earn more than $1.5 billion at the global box office.
North America alone contributed close to $722 million. Audience response has remained strong.
The film holds an 8.2/10 rating on IMDb from over 900,000 votes. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 96% critics' score. Its audience score stands even higher, at 99%.
Awards and Recognition
The film's success extended into awards season. "Top Gun: Maverick" received six Oscar nominations.
It won Best Sound at the 2023 Academy Awards. The film also picked up two Saturn Awards — Best Action/Adventure Film and Best Actor for Cruise.
