Walmart Finally Ends Apple Pay Holdout — Here's When It Starts

Walmart: Walmart Inc. is ending its long resistance to Apple Pay.

The retail giant announced Friday that contactless payments are coming to all its stores by year's end.

The move is aimed at making the shopping experience faster and easier for customers. Shoppers will also be able to use Apple Pay on Walmart's website and mobile app.

The decision marks a major shift for the company. Walmart had stood out as one of the last major holdouts on Apple Pay.

That stance drew frustration from some shoppers, especially as the payment method became standard at most retailers.

Contactless payments let customers check out by simply tapping a card or phone at the terminal. The technology speeds up transactions and cuts down on wait times.

Until now, Walmart Pay was the only contactless option available in stores. That system operates exclusively through the Walmart app.

The rollout begins Aug. 24 at select Walmart and Sam's Club locations. Contactless payments will expand to all stores by the end of 2026. Walmart gas stations will follow by mid-2027.

The announcement comes just a day after Walmart posted its quarterly earnings. The company reported a rare miss on expectations.

It also recorded its slowest U.S. comparable sales growth in more than six years. Pricing pressure in its pharmacy division was cited as a key factor.

Walmart, headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, has been investing heavily in e-commerce and faster delivery in recent years.

The company continues to prioritize convenience as it works to attract and retain shoppers.
