His 2026 film "Shelter" has been bouncing in and out of top 10 lists since it launched digitally. The movie is now gaining momentum on a second streaming service.
It's closing in on one of the year's top blockbusters. Anyone questioning Statham's box office pull may be underestimating him.
A Career Highlight for Statham
"Shelter" casts Statham as Michael Mason, a retired MI6 operative living alone on a remote island.
His only human contact comes from a supply runner, played by Michael Shaeffer, and the man's niece, Jessie, played by Bodhi Rae Breathnach. Jessie initially clashes with Mason.
That changes after an ocean accident kills her uncle and leaves her stranded at sea. Mason saves her life. She begins to see him differently.
Trouble follows when Mason is caught on a surveillance camera during a supply run. The footage alerts his former boss, Stephen Manafort, played by Bill Nighy.
Manafort has been using a monitoring program to track down his old operative. Armed agents soon arrive on the island to eliminate Mason and Jessie.
Mason is forced back into action. He fights to protect Jessie while trying to survive the assault.
Critics who doubted Statham's action chops were proven wrong. He turns 59 this year, but his physicality hasn't slowed.
It's been 24 years since "The Transporter" launched his career. Yet Statham still commands the screen like a top-tier action lead.
Director Ric Roman Waugh deserves credit too. His work on "Shelter" is sharper than he's often given credit for.
The film stands out as one of Statham's most tonally serious projects. Many consider it among his strongest work in years.
Streaming Success Contrasts With Box Office Numbers
Statham's grip on streaming remains firm. "Shelter" isn't his only title performing well.
"A Working Man" and "The Beekeeper" are also holding steady on popularity charts.
"Shelter" currently ranks No. 1 on Starz. It's also climbing on Prime Video, where it now sits at No. 3.
Newer releases like "Project Hail Mary" and "The Sheep Detectives" remain ahead of it on that platform.
"A Working Man" holds the No. 5 spot on the same Prime Video list.
The streaming success hasn't translated to theaters. "The Beekeeper" earned more than $162 million on a $40 million budget.
"A Working Man" brought in $89 million against the same $40 million budget. "Shelter," by comparison, made just over $53 million.
Its production budget was $50 million, making the film a box office disappointment. Statham will look to bounce back with "Mutiny."
A strong theatrical run could help him reclaim box office momentum while keeping his streaming dominance intact.
