Walmart ChatGPT Partnership: Walmart, the biggest retailer in the country, has joined hands with OpenAI to make shopping smarter and more personal. The partnership is designed to help customers find and buy what they need more easily.
With ChatGPT now teaming up with Walmart, shoppers will be able to make purchases directly through the AI-powered chatbot app.
“For a long time, online shopping has looked the same — type in a search and scroll through pages of products,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement. “That’s about to change.”
Walmart hasn’t revealed the full details of its partnership with OpenAI yet. It’s also unclear when shoppers will start seeing ChatGPT built into their online experience, though the company says it’s coming “soon.”
Walmart, the largest private employer in the U.S., is stepping up its efforts to use AI across its daily operations. The new partnership with OpenAI is a major part of that plan.
As the race for AI-powered online shopping heats up, Walmart and its chatbot, Sparky, are still working to catch up with Amazon. Amazon introduced its shopping assistant, Rufus, in February 2024, while Walmart rolled out Sparky later in June.
AI-assisted shopping is growing fast, but it’s not without issues. The technology can still misfire, offering products that don’t match what shoppers want.
Privacy advocates are also sounding alarms. They caution that AI shopping tools could let retailers collect even more personal information than they currently do.
The deal with Walmart adds to a wave of recent partnerships for OpenAI. In the past weeks, the company has teamed up with some of the biggest names in AI and chip technology.
Many of these agreements involve circular investments, where funds move repeatedly between the same companies. Analysts caution that this setup could conceal vulnerabilities within the major players fueling the AI boom.
Collaborating with companies like Walmart could help address some of these worries. “We’re excited to work with Walmart to make daily shopping more convenient,” said OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman.
“This partnership is just one way AI can support people in their everyday lives.” This partnership could help OpenAI reach a large group of shoppers who haven’t used AI chat tools before.
“We’re creating a native AI experience that is multimedia, personalized, and tailored to each shopper,” said Walmart CEO Doug McMillon.
