Sam Howell Trade: The Minnesota Vikings shuffled their quarterback room on Sunday. They brought in Carson Wentz and sent Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In the deal, Minnesota secured a fifth-round pick in 2026 and a seventh-round pick in 2027. Philadelphia, meanwhile, landed Howell and a sixth-round pick in 2026.
The extra draft pick gives Minnesota more options to target a proven wide receiver. League sources say they’ve already checked in on Panthers veteran Adam Thielen, though Carolina has been reluctant to move him.
Carson Wentz, meanwhile, has been on the market since his contract with the Chiefs ended in March. The Vikings will be the sixth stop of his career in as many years.

They’re confident he can learn the system quickly after spending last season with the Rams, who run an offense similar to Kevin O’Connell’s.
Wentz also shares history with quarterbacks coach Josh McCown, as the two were teammates in Philadelphia back in 2019.
The signing of Carson Wentz closes a frustrating chapter in Minnesota’s search for the right quarterback to support J.J. McCarthy. In March, the Vikings reached out to Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones.
Still, both passed on the opportunity, knowing McCarthy was expected to start once healthy from the meniscus injury that had sidelined him in his rookie year. The team also explored Aaron Rodgers as an option, though he chose Pittsburgh instead.
Sam Howell, 24, never gained momentum after arriving from Seattle in an April draft-pick swap. His struggles showed during training camp and into the preseason.
Coaches, however, have been encouraged by undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who has made a case for the No. 3 spot. Even so, Minnesota wanted a seasoned presence behind McCarthy, which led them to Wentz.
Sam Howell’s trade to the Eagles is the third move of his young career, dating back to when Washington drafted him in the fifth round in 2022.
To clear space on the roster, Philadelphia waived defensive back Lewis Cine with an injury designation.
The deal comes at a tricky time for the Eagles. Tanner McKee, penciled in as their No. 2 quarterback, hurt a finger on his throwing hand during training camp last week.
He was examined on the field by a trainer and general manager, Howie Roseman, after an 11-on-11 drill. McKee hasn’t practiced since.
When asked if Tanner McKee would be ready for Week 1, coach Nick Sirianni kept his answer short. He said McKee is dealing with a finger injury, working to recover, and the team will have to see where things stand closer to kickoff.
In the meantime, rookie Kyle McCord continues to hold the third-string role. His play has been uneven through the summer, and he appears to need more seasoning before stepping into an NFL game.
Sam Howell had little familiarity with the Vikings’ system and struggled for much of camp. He didn’t take the field in Friday’s preseason finale against the Titans.
Afterward, Kevin O’Connell said he was comfortable with Howell’s progress. Still, the Vikings hosted Carson Wentz for a workout the following day.
Carson Wentz, now 32, was taken second overall in the 2016 draft. His best year came in 2017, when he passed for 3,296 yards and 33 touchdowns in only 13 games, finishing third in MVP voting.
That run ended early with a torn ACL, forcing him to watch from the sidelines as the Eagles went on to win Super Bowl LII. Ahead of the 2021 season, Philadelphia traded him to the Colts.
From there, Wentz’s career turned into a journey. He suited up for Washington in 2022, the Rams in 2023, and the Chiefs in 2024. Across nine NFL seasons, he has thrown for 22,410 yards, 153 touchdowns, and 67 interceptions.
