Rafael Devers: The Boston Red Sox made a bold move on Monday by trading Rafael Devers.

The news caught many fans off guard — including Hall of Famer David Ortiz, who reacted with surprise. Devers is now headed to the San Francisco Giants.

In return, the Red Sox received four players, including promising pitcher Kyle Harrison and reliever Jordan Hicks.

This move brings an end to the ongoing back-and-forth between Devers and the team’s front office.

Tensions reportedly began when the Red Sox chose to sign Alex Bregman, signaling a shift in direction.

The Red Sox asked Rafael Devers to move off third base. He wasn’t on board with that idea. Even after Triston Casas got injured, Devers still didn’t want to shift to first base.

At one point, manager Alex Cora even started calling him the team’s designated hitter.

That disagreement didn’t just fade away — it grew. Eventually, it led to the Red Sox trading Devers to a National League West team.

David Ortiz, speaking to The Athletic, said he saw it coming. He felt the situation was bound to go downhill.

Ortiz also hinted that Devers may have needed a bit more maturity in how he handled things.

“I played for the Red Sox for many years,” Ortiz said. “Do you think everything between me and the team was always perfect? I had my fair share of tough moments too.”

He explained that the key was handling things the right way. “I was mature enough to keep those issues private,” he said.

“Even in the best families, even between the closest brothers — things can go wrong.”

“What matters is having the maturity to face those problems, work through them, and move forward.”

Ortiz pointed out that, in the end, the team holds the real power. It doesn’t matter how much money a player is still owed.

The organization gets to make the final call.

“I know the communication between Devers and the Red Sox wasn’t great in the beginning,” Ortiz said.

“But at some point, you’ve got to understand — the team has control over everything.” “They decide if you play, if you get traded, or if they let you go.”

Ortiz admitted that it’s not always easy for younger players to see the bigger picture.

“When you’re young, it’s hard to understand,” he said.

“But the team has the final say.

They can make whatever decision they feel is right.”

“At the end of the day, the only thing a player can control is how he shows up and performs on the field.”

Despite all the noise, Devers was putting up strong numbers. He was hitting .272 with a .905 OPS.

He had 15 home runs to his name. He also led the American League in walks, drawing 56 free passes. No one had played more games this season than him — 73 in total.
