Red Sox Liam Hendriks Returns: Liam Hendriks is back. The 36-year-old right-handed pitcher made his major league comeback with the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, July 20, 2025.

His first big league activation in 680 days happened at this time.

Inside the Red Sox clubhouse, Hendriks smiled and said, "It feels like at least a thousand." "Getting here has been a long and difficult journey."

In December 2022, Hendriks was issued a Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis.

He made an incredible recovery and returned to the mound on May 29, 2023, despite the serious diagnosis.

Before staying on the injured list again due to elbow discomfort, he pitched in five games.

Hendriks had Tommy John surgery on August 2, 2023. He was selected the 2023 AL Comeback Player of the Year despite only making five appearances, which is an example to his commitment and strength.

He started working his way back after surgery. Last August, he made six minor league rehab appearances.

He added three more this spring. He was finally activated from the 15-day injured list by the Red Sox on July 20.

They also moved pitcher Hunter Dobbins to Triple-A Worcester as an alternative.

Hendriks' comeback was warmly welcomed by teammates and fans alike. One of the league's most beloved players, he is well-known for both his charity work and his skill on the pitch.

He gave custom T-shirts to Red Sox staff members at the season-ending celebration last year. Liam Hendriks is that type of person.

But getting back wasn't easy. There were serious worries about Hendriks during spring training.

He said, "Hitters looked too comfortable, even when I was throwing 96 mph." "It became a mental struggle."

Hendriks found it difficult to understand the change. "Every piece of data had the same looks," he said.

It didn't feel the same, but. The 'jump' on my fastball just did not exist.

Hendriks, a three-time All-Star, had always depended on his ability to blow pitches past hitters.

He was named an All-Star twice with the White Sox in 2021 and 2022, and once with Oakland in 2019.

He was lost without that edge. But his wife, Kristi, was his strongest supporter through it all.

He said, "She kept insisting that I come every day." "She ensured that I was actually better."

"That and the fact that she was getting tired of me being on the IL," he continued, laughing.

Red Sox player Liam Hendriks is ready for an entirely new chapter of his life. He is in good health.

He is strong. He has returned at last. And after 680 long days, baseball fans couldn’t be happier.
