Street Fighter: Street Fighter took the top spot at the box office this weekend. Several new films opened. Only one finished first.

The martial arts film from Paramount and Capcom earned $51.1 million worldwide, according to Variety.

Of that total, $31 million came from the domestic market.

The global opening already beats the 2009 film The Legend of Chun-Li. That movie earned about $12.7 million to $12.8 million.

It still trails the 1994 Street Fighter, which brought in $99.4 million.

Other recent video game adaptations opened bigger. September's Resident Evil earned $108.3 million. May's Mortal Kombat II took in $60 million.

Reaction to the film has been mixed. Critics and audiences are divided. That split has dominated online conversation.

The movie reportedly cost $82 million to make. The divide could hurt its run in the coming weeks.

The release calendar gets much busier as the month and year wind down.

The ending points toward more. The creative team appears ready to continue the story.

Ticket sales and future streaming numbers will decide if that happens.

Another genre release also opened this weekend. Whalefall, starring Austin Abrams, earned $8 million domestically and $17.5 million worldwide.

Those domestic numbers fell short of analyst projections. Strong early impressions could still help it over time.

Audiences also showed heavy interest in You Can See Everything, from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim.

Next weekend brings more competition. Wicker, Klara and the Sun, Clayface and Wildwood all arrive on October 23. Moviegoers will have plenty of choices.
