Michael Douglas Explains the Lie He Told About Kathleen Turner for 40 Years

Michael Douglas: Michael Douglas has confirmed a long-rumored romance with Kathleen Turner.

Actor Michael Douglas posing at a Hollywood red carpet event, sharing a candid moment regarding his long-held secret romance.

The two actors became involved while filming "Romancing the Stone" in 1984.

Douglas shared the news in his new memoir, "One Helluva Ride." He says the pair denied the relationship for more than 40 years.

Each time fans asked about their chemistry, they gave the same answer.

That answer was that they flirted but nothing happened. Douglas now says it was untrue.

He described it as "a lie meant to protect my wife and son." People magazine published an excerpt of the book on Friday.

At the time, Douglas was separated from his first wife, Diandra. He writes that he slipped into Turner's hotel room late at night.

He says co-star Danny DeVito and director Robert Zemeckis had no idea.

The secret nearly came out during a trip to Mexico. Diandra visited the set with the couple's son, Cameron, who was 5.

She grew suspicious and spoke privately with Turner.

Douglas says Diandra made it clear that, in her view, the marriage was not over.

Their understanding of the separation did not match. Turner backed off because she did not want to get in the way.

The actors ended the relationship after that visit. Douglas returned to Diandra for the sake of their son.

He now says the reunion was a mistake. He writes that the marriage was never the same.

"Romancing the Stone" became a major box office hit. Turner then tried to avoid the sequel, "The Jewel of the Nile."

She was bound by her contract and had to return. Douglas says the two repaired their friendship during production.

They have stayed close ever since. They reunited on screen for "The War of the Roses" in 1989.

They worked together again on the Netflix series "The Kominsky Method."

Diandra filed for divorce in 1995. Douglas married actress Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000. They have two children together.

"One Helluva Ride" goes on sale Oct. 6.
