Eric André: A years-old feud between Chet Hanks and Eric André played out in public at ComplexCon.
The two clashed at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Hanks filmed the encounter and shared it on Instagram.
André, 43, had the final say. As security led him away, he shouted a jab about Hanks' famous father.
How the feud started
The tension traces back to 2023. Hanks was a guest on "The Eric André Show" that year.
André later described the shoot in an interview with Rolling Stone. He called Hanks a "tough cookie."
André said the actor and rapper threw the crew off balance. He claimed Hanks rode a motorcycle around the studio.
He said it nearly knocked crew members off their ladders. He called the stunt dangerous.
He also said Hanks' own pranks were cut from the final episode.
Hanks gave a different account to The Independent. He said he had never seen the show before his appearance.
Once he saw its chaotic style, he decided to match it. He said the crew brought a dirt bike onto the set.
He already rode dirt bikes, so he took it for a spin. He said he did a small wheelie and brushed off warnings.
Hanks also accused André of resenting him. In his view, he had outshined the host on his own show.
André's 2023 challenge
André spoke to The Independent around the same time. He rejected the idea that the feud was a publicity stunt.
He said Hanks should repeat his criticism to his face. He then joked that he doubted Hanks was really Tom Hanks' son.
He said Hanks should bring a birth certificate as proof.
The ComplexCon confrontation
Hanks apparently saw ComplexCon as his chance. In the video, he walks up behind André and puts a hand on his shoulder.
One of André's security guards immediately tries to move it away.
André turns around and looks surprised. He starts to offer a handshake. He does not seem interested in following through.
The crowd noise makes most of the exchange hard to hear. André also does not appear to be wearing a microphone.
The mood grows tense as security steps between the two men.
Guards then separate them. Some block Hanks. Others walk André through the packed hall.
Hanks' Instagram caption
Hanks, an "Empire" actor, addressed the security detail in his post.
He wrote that André "apparently travels to ComplexCon with 4 security guards."
He added a sarcastic remark about André being uneasy in the environment.
He also tied the run-in to a second dispute. It involves the Jamaican accent Hanks has used in the past.
Hanks said André eventually admitted he took issue with it. According to Hanks, André felt it mocked Caribbean culture.
Hanks responded with sarcasm. He joked that André was a passionate cultural activist on top of his reputation for crude humor.
He also claimed André had no memory of criticizing him publicly.
He closed the post with a cheerful line. He said it was great running into André.
The parting shot
As André was escorted away, he looked back at Hanks. He yelled, "Call Tom Hanks!"
Hanks returned to the friends who had been filming. He looked pleased with how it went. "That was a long time coming," he said.
