Sam Rockwell stars as Raymond "Ray" Gunn. He plays a private eye caught up in a high-stakes case.
Scarlett Johansson co-stars as Venus Nova. Her character is a pop star facing a scandal. That scandal threatens both her career and her life.
The trailer introduces Gunn's futuristic world. Humans and aliens coexist there. Gunn teams up with his alien colleague, Eyera.
Tom Waits voices the character. Together, the pair dig into a case tangled in mystery and scandal.
The supporting cast is stacked. Patton Oswalt, Kathryn Hunter, John Ratzenberger and Jamie Costa round out the ensemble.
A Decades-Long Journey to the Screen
"Ray Gunn" has a long history. Bird first conceived the idea after seeing a trailer for "Peter Gunn" in 1989.
Turner Feature Animation originally planned to produce the film in the 1990s. Those plans stalled when Bird moved on to direct "The Iron Giant." Warner Bros. released that film in 1999.
The project resurfaced in 2021. Bird signed on with Skydance Animation to direct "Ray Gunn." The deal reunited him with John Lasseter.
The two previously collaborated at Pixar. Together, they worked on "The Incredibles," "Ratatouille" and "Incredibles 2."
The film also reunites Bird with producers David Ellison and Dana Goldberg.
The trio previously worked together at Skydance Media. That partnership produced "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol."
Production Team and Release Details
Bird, Lasseter, Ellison, Goldberg and Lisa Beroud serve as producers on the film. To focus on "Ray Gunn," Bird stepped away from directing "Incredibles 3."
That Pixar sequel is slated for 2028. Peter Sohn has taken over as director. Sohn previously directed "The Good Dinosaur" and "Elemental."
"Ray Gunn" premieres on Netflix on Dec. 18, 2026.
