Before turning to Malone, North Carolina evaluated several high-profile college coaches.
Among them were Dusty May of University of Michigan, Tommy Lloyd of University of Arizona, and T. J. Otzelberger of Iowa State University.
All three coaches opted to remain with their respective programs. That development prompted UNC to shift its focus.
Malone notably led Denver to its first NBA title in 2023. He was later relieved of his duties by the franchise in April.
He transitioned into broadcasting soon after, joining ESPN as an analyst.
Hubert Davis was relieved of his duties by the University of North Carolina on March 24.
The move followed a disappointing result in the NCAA Tournament just days earlier.

That victory came under former head coach Roy Williams, who led the program before Davis.
