Organizers ruled out Qatar as the host for the 2026 Finalissima after rising geopolitical tensions in the region.
The situation escalated following recent military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against targets in Iran.
The developments created uncertainty across the Middle East and raised concerns about holding a major international match in the country.
Officials from UEFA and CONMEBOL worked with the local organizing committee to review other possibilities.
Several alternative venues were discussed during the talks. Among them were Madrid in Spain and Buenos Aires in Argentina.
The groups also considered adjusting the match date to make a new arrangement possible. However, negotiations did not lead to a shared decision.
Without agreement on a new venue or schedule, organizers decided the match could not go ahead as planned.
UEFA confirmed that the 2026 Finalissima will not be staged in Qatar after holding extensive talks with local organizers.
Officials said the match could not proceed in the country because of the ongoing political tensions affecting the region.
The European governing body said it examined several alternatives once Qatar was ruled out as the host venue.
However, none of the proposed solutions gained full approval from the Argentine Football Association.

Officials noted that the Madrid venue would have offered a high-profile stage suitable for a major international fixture.

As a result, organizers were unable to finalize an alternative arrangement for the match.
UEFA also examined the possibility of changing the format of the 2026 Finalissima in order to keep the fixture alive.
One proposal suggested turning the contest into a two-leg series rather than a single match.
Under that plan, the opening game would have been played at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on March 27.
A return leg was then expected to take place in Buenos Aires during a future international window ahead of UEFA Euro 2028 and the 2028 Copa América.
Organizers also proposed an equal ticket allocation for supporters of both teams for the match in Madrid.
The idea, however, did not gain approval from the Argentine Football Association. UEFA then pursued another alternative.
Officials asked Argentina to commit to playing the match if a neutral venue in Europe could be secured.
The governing body suggested keeping the original date of March 27 or shifting the game slightly to March 30.
That proposal was also declined. With no agreement reached on a venue, format, or revised date, the plans for the match were ultimately abandoned.
UEFA said the Argentina national football team later suggested staging the Finalissima after the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
That proposal, however, could not be pursued because the Spain national football team did not have available dates in its calendar during that period.
According to UEFA, Argentina later indicated it would be available to play only on March 31.
The match had originally been planned for March 27. Organizers determined that shifting the fixture to the new date would not be feasible.
With no suitable schedule in place, the project was abandoned.
The game had been planned as the fourth edition of the Finalissima, the intercontinental clash between the champions of Europe and South America.
Despite the competition’s history, the trophy has been contested only once in the 21st century.
The Argentina national football team is the reigning champion of the Finalissima.
Argentina claimed the most recent title in 2022 after defeating the Italy national football team 3–0 at Wembley Stadium in London.
The intercontinental contest has its roots in the Artemio Franchi Cup. The first edition of that tournament was played in 1985.
On that occasion, the France national football team defeated the Uruguay national football team to secure the trophy.
The competition returned in 1993. During that match, Argentina faced the Denmark national football team and prevailed in a penalty shootout to lift the title.
The scheduled Finalissima was also expected to feature a notable first-time matchup.
The game would have placed rising star Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona against veteran forward Lionel Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami CF.
Yamal, 18, is considered one of the most promising young players in world football. His rapid rise has often led to comparisons with the 38-year-old Messi.
